Why mastering self-reflection can transform your business.

Reflecting on our performance and behaviours is something that most people never make time for……they feel like they have other more important priorities.

But have you ever heard the saying, “The rate of the pack is always defined by the pace of the leader.”?

This is one of the sayings I live by…..and it has been one of the most impactful realisations for my business.

If things in your business aren’t going as you’d like them to, it’s easy to get frustrated at others and start blaming your team, your clients, and the world around you.

But that doesn’t serve a useful purpose and certainly doesn’t move you, your business or your team forward.

Because even if a problem is within your team, your clients, or your business, it needs to be resolved; ultimate responsibility for that comes back to you.

“Self-reflection is a humbling process. It’s essential to find out why you think, say, and do certain things…. then better yourself.”

Sonya Teclai

So the first thing you need to look at is yourself.

That can be the challenging part.

What are you saying or not saying? What are you doing or not doing that is leading to these issues within your business?

The definition of self-reflection is “serious thought about one’s character and actions,” and I believe this is integral to being an effective and successful business leader.

I know my business doesn’t work unless I do, and one of the key ways to achieve my business goals is to work on myself, my actions and behaviours as a priority.

Learn how to do this, and the game changes in your favour.

Whenever you feel stuck or frustrated, you can ask yourself the questions that will move you forward; I call it Q-Storming

Knowing and practising this effective leadership tool gives you confidence in yourself and the ability to work through any business challenges.

I can’t control other people’s actions, but I can always control my own. This is another excellent insight and another tool for the leadership toolbox.

Here are just a few helpful self-reflection questions……

1- Where am I settling for?

2- What skills or talents am I not using or need to learn?

3- What missed opportunity can I let go of and move on?

4- What have I been avoiding out of fear?

5- What risks would I take if I had no fear?

Regularly asking yourself these five questions will bring you greater clarity and perspective – two essential requirements for business success.

“Great leaders develop through a never-ending process of self-study, self-reflection, education, training, and experience.”

Tony Buon.

As leaders, we set the pace. We lead by example, and others follow.

So we must ask ourselves, are we genuinely setting a pace, tone, or example that we’re proud of?

And is my approach benefiting my team or my business? Or is it causing challenges that I need to address?

As you approach each task, ask yourself, “What is the best I can do on this today?” “What is the very best result I should expect?”

Keep a positive attitude, ask questions, be open-minded, learn from others, get out of your comfort zone, and add more things to your “MUST DO or Daily HPA” list.

Have an honest conversation with the people around you, smile more, laugh and engage.

If this is what your best YOU looks like, recognise it and embrace it.

Once you have lived one day as your best, back it up with another and another one after that. Bit by bit and day by day, you are developing a new set of habits.

You are creating the habit of being your best every day.

Realising that everything in life is cumulative is another critical leadership tool.

Rarely does one thing matter; however, cumulatively, things matter greatly. So be aware that you are building positive momentum each day you consistently focus on being your best.

Build enough positive momentum, and things begin to change dramatically.

The level of success in your business is closely correlated to the level of your personal and professional development.

So, are you giving yourself the best chance of being successful?
