Why Most Leadership Programmes Don’t Stick
I’ve seen a lot of leadership training in my time. Some of it good. Some of it painfully beige. Some of it had more flipcharts than sense.
Before The Power Within Training existed, I was leading teams inside billion-dollar companies in the UAE. Big teams, big pressure, big expectations. Like many leaders, I wanted my people to grow, so I sent them on leadership programmes. Not once or twice. Countless times.
And every time, the same thing happened.
They came back buzzing. Motivated. Full of ideas. Ready to communicate better, delegate more, give feedback, manage time, set goals, handle conflict, all the usual suspects.
For a few days, the energy was brilliant. You could almost hear the Rocky theme tune playing in the background.
Then life happened.
The inbox filled up. Pressure returned. Targets kicked in. Difficult conversations appeared. Old habits crept back in like they’d never left. Within a week or two, not much had really changed.
That bothered me.
Because the people weren’t the problem. They were talented, capable, ambitious people who wanted to do well. The training wasn’t always terrible either. A lot of the tools made sense. The issue was deeper.
Most leadership programmes don’t stick because they focus too much on what leaders should do, and nowhere near enough on what drives the way leaders think.
The Problem With Traditional Leadership Training
Most leadership training gives people tools. Frameworks. Models. Steps. Processes. Templates. Lovely little diagrams that look great in a workbook and make everyone feel very organised for about five minutes.
There’s nothing wrong with practical tools. Leaders need them. A good feedback model, a clear delegation process, or a better way to structure conversations can be genuinely useful.
The problem is that tools only work when the person using them has the mindset to apply them under pressure.
That’s where things start to fall apart.
A leader can learn how to give feedback, then avoid the conversation because they’re worried someone will take it badly. They can learn how to delegate, then hold onto everything because they believe no one else will do it properly. They can learn how to set boundaries, then say yes to everything because they don’t want to let people down.
On paper, they know what to do.
In real life, their beliefs take over.
That’s why so many leadership programmes don’t stick. They train the behaviour, but they miss the belief system underneath it.
Leadership Is Personal
Leadership isn’t just a job title or a set of skills. It’s personal.
When someone steps into leadership, they bring their confidence, doubts, fears, assumptions, past experiences, and inner stories with them. Some of those stories help them. Some quietly hold them back.
A new manager may think, “I need everyone to like me.” A senior leader may think, “If I ask for help, people will think I’m weak.” A business owner may think, “If I’m not involved in everything, it’ll all fall apart.”
Those thoughts shape behaviour.
They affect how people communicate, how they make decisions, how they handle pressure, how they deal with conflict, and how they lead their teams.
This is the bit many leadership programmes skip over. They go straight to the surface and try to tidy up the behaviour, without looking at what’s causing it in the first place. It’s a bit like painting over damp. It might look better for a while, but eventually the problem comes through again.
Why The Power Within Training Was Created
After years of seeing the same pattern, I knew there had to be a better way.
When the opportunity came, my wife Enas and I decided to build something different. That’s how The Power Within Training was born.
We didn’t want to create another leadership development company that recycled the same old content in a shinier slide deck. We wanted to get to the root of why leaders behave the way they do.
The Power Within Training was set up because something vital was missing from traditional leadership training.
Most programmes focused on actions, behaviours, and practical tools. Useful, yes, but they only scratched the surface. They rarely touched the thing that actually drives how people show up as leaders: mindset and belief systems.
Across every sector and level, we saw talented people being promoted, stretched, and trusted with responsibility, yet never supported with the inner side of leadership. No one was helping them deal with self doubt, fear of getting it wrong, pressure, or the stories they told themselves when things got tough.
That gap became our purpose.
What Makes Our Leadership Programmes Different?
Everything The Power Within Training does is built around our Motivational Intelligence framework.
Motivational Intelligence looks at the thinking behind behaviour. It helps leaders understand what drives them, what blocks them, and what needs to shift for real growth to happen.
Because lasting leadership development doesn’t come from memorising a model. It comes from changing how someone sees themselves, their role, and what’s possible.
When leaders challenge old beliefs, they start making different choices. They speak up sooner. They delegate with more trust. They stop avoiding the conversations everyone else is tiptoeing around. They handle pressure with more clarity. They become more consistent, because the change is happening below the surface.
That’s when skills start to stick.
It’s the difference between giving someone a script and helping them find their voice.
Why Leadership Development Needs to Go Deeper
If leadership training only focuses on what people should do, the change will always be fragile.
Because when pressure hits, people don’t rise to the level of their workbook. They fall back to the level of their beliefs.
If someone believes they’re going to fail, they’ll play safe. If they believe conflict is dangerous, they’ll avoid it. If they believe they have to do everything themselves, they’ll burn out while calling it commitment.
Real leadership development has to go deeper than surface-level behaviour. It needs to help people understand themselves, challenge the stories that limit them, and build the confidence to lead when things are messy, uncertain, or uncomfortable.
Because that’s where leadership actually happens.
It doesn’t happen in the training room when everyone has a coffee, a nice biscuit, and a colour-coded handout.
It happens on a Tuesday afternoon when a client is pushing back, a team member is underperforming, deadlines are tight, and the leader has to choose how they respond.
That’s the moment that matters.
How to Make Leadership Training Last
For leadership programmes to stick, they need to do more than inspire people for a few days.
They need to create self-awareness. They need to challenge thinking. They need to connect mindset with behaviour. They need to give leaders practical tools, while also helping them understand why they struggle to use those tools when the pressure is on.
That’s the work The Power Within Training does.
It’s practical, but it starts deeper. It’s structured, but it’s personal. It gives leaders tools, and it helps them build the mindset to use them properly.
Because leaders don’t need another folder full of notes gathering dust on a shelf.
They need development that changes how they think, how they act, and how they show up when it counts.
That’s why The Power Within Training exists.
And that’s why our approach is different.
Ready to develop leaders who actually change?
If your organisation has invested in leadership training before and felt the results fade after a few weeks, you’re not alone. It happens more often than most people admit.
The good news is, it doesn’t have to stay that way.
The Power Within Training helps leaders build the mindset, confidence, and practical skills to create lasting change, in themselves, their teams, and their organisations.
Explore our leadership development programmes and coaching options and discover a different way to develop leaders, one that starts at the root and creates change that lasts.
