Why Your Team Feels the Mood You Walk in With

By James Fleming, Co-Founder and Managing Director, The Power Within Training

We’ve all had those mornings.

You walk in already carrying something. Stress from home. Pressure from work. A conversation that didn’t go well. A decision sitting on your mind.

You haven’t said a word yet, but the room feels different.

And if you’re honest, you can sense it in other people too. When someone else walks in tense or frustrated, you feel it straight away. No one has to explain it.

That’s how it works in leadership as well.

Your team feels the mood you walk in with.

It’s not just what we say, it’s how we show up

As leaders, we often focus on communication. What we say in meetings. How we brief the team. The messages we give.

But people don’t just listen to words. They read energy, notice tone, and pick up on body language and pace.

If we walk in rushed, short, distracted, people feel it. If we walk in calm, clear and present, they feel that too.

We don’t have to be perfect. But we do need to be aware of how we’re showing up.

Because whether we mean to or not, it sets the tone for everyone else.

We’ve all seen what it does to a team

Think about a time you’ve worked under pressure with a leader who was constantly stressed or unpredictable.

You probably second guessed yourself more or held back ideas. You likely played it safe.

Now think about a leader who stayed steady, even when things were tough.

You trusted them and you felt clearer. You were more willing to step up and take responsibility.

That difference isn’t down to strategy or systems.

It’s down to how that leader showed up.

This is where the MQ mindset comes in

At The Power Within Training, we talk a lot about the MQ mindset because it sits right at the centre of this.

How we think affects how we feel.

How we feel affects how we behave.

And how we behave shapes the culture around us.

We all have moments where we feel stressed, frustrated or under pressure. That’s part of leadership. The key is recognising it and choosing how we respond.

When we build that awareness of our thinking, we create space. We don’t just react. We choose how we show up in the room.

That’s self-leadership.

And it’s where better leadership starts.

It’s not about pretending everything’s fine

This isn’t about walking in with a fake smile when things are difficult.

People see straight through that.

It’s about being real and steady at the same time. Acknowledging challenges without letting them take over how we treat people or how we lead.

We don’t need to be perfect. We just need to be consistent.

When a team knows what to expect from us, even on tough days, it builds trust.

And trust is what allows people to think clearly, communicate openly and take ownership.

A small habit we can all use

One of the simplest things we encourage leaders to do is pause before they walk into the room.

Before a meeting, conversation, or stepping onto site.

Just take a moment and ask yourself, what am I bringing in with me right now?

If it’s pressure or frustration, acknowledge it. Then decide how you want to show up instead.

It sounds small, but it changes the whole feel of an interaction.

Over time, those small moments shape the culture of the team.

Leadership starts with us

It’s easy to focus on targets, deadlines and results. Of course, they matter.

But how we show up each day influences how those results are achieved.

Our mood, our presence, and our thinking.

Our team feels it all.

And when we learn to manage that, we don’t just improve our own performance. We create an environment where other people can perform at their best, too.

That’s what leadership looks like in practice.

Ready to lead with more awareness and impact?

If you want to understand how your thinking influences your behaviour, your team and your results, The Power Within Training works with leaders to build that awareness and control through the MQ mindset. For a simple starting point, our free MQ Meter gives a quick snapshot of how you’re currently thinking, feeling and showing up as a leader.

Life-changing leadership. Lifelong results.

It starts with how we lead ourselves.
